Traditions & Customs
The Caribbean, an enchanting jewel bathed by the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea, unveils much more than just a sunny holiday destination. It embodies the crucible of a culture of incomparable richness, the result of the dynamic merging of indigenous, African, European, and Asian heritages. At the heart of this vibrant Caribbean life, music and dance set the rhythm for days and nights, carrying intoxicating sounds of zouk, reggae, calypso, and soca. Caribbean cuisine, a subtle blend of local spices and fresh ingredients such as exquisite fish, tropical fruits, and root vegetables, awakens the senses with emblematic dishes like smoked chicken, crispy cod fritters, and rice with black beans. Traditional craftsmanship, a reflection of the Caribbean soul, dazzles with its finesse, from delicate basketry to elaborate wood carvings, and shell jewelry.
Did you know that in St. Barth, in the heart of the charming bay of Corossol, traditional boats, known as "doris," and lobster traps still persist, waiting to be cast into the water? The weaving of straw, a tradition of local craftsmanship, is perpetuated in this village, where hats and other wickerwork accessories and decorations are also made from dried latan palm leaves. These same woven leaves have been reproduced at Le Barthélemy, adorning the walls of our magnificent suites.

Agence Territoriale de l'Environnement de Saint-Barthélemy
The Environmental Territorial Agency – also known as ATE – is a public establishment created back in 2013; it is widely known for notably taking over all the missions of the GRENAT association on the island, including the management of the Nature Reserve.
At Le Barth, we have collaborated and aided the ATE by donating a portion of each booking to help with sea turtle preservation and the protection and maintenance of the Grand Cul de Sac's turtle nursery.

Coral Restoration St. Barth
With the goal of repopulating reef areas with genetically reinforced, diverse coral species selected to reseed the reefs, St. Barts’ Coral Restoration Program makes it possible to protect, study, and better understand the various specimens that find a home within our island’s many water bodies.
Our financial aid to their Coral Restoration Program has allowed for a greater impact and eased the possibility of keeping it up.

Conscious Design & Reef Conservation at Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa
Strengthening our commitment to sustainability, our 44-room boutique hotel recently introduced a zero-waste culinary concept and workshop headed up by Chef Jérémy Czaplicki at our beachfront restaurant, Amis St. Barth, and an expanded partnership with Coral Restoration to offer interactive guided diving to rehabilitate the surrounding reef, beginning this April.
The new initiatives build on our hotel’s conscious construction, which emphasizes an open-air, naturally-derived architecture to limit energy consumption by embracing natural-light and using solar energy, while incorporating organic and low-impact materials, such as locally hewn stone and wood, linens sourced from ethically-traced organic cotton and 60 percent (and growing) of in-room amenities sourced from ethical and environmentally-friendly labels. Le Barth ethos is centered around embracing and protecting the island’s natural flora and fauna, which is why all fertilizers, plants and soil on the property are organic, cleaning products are eco-friendly, sunblock and lotions sold on property are reef-safe, and desalination is employed for ecological water usage.
Discover Le Barth’s #GreenVibesOnly
Since opening in 2016, our beautiful hotel has been using and instilling a series of materials and products in order to reduce its impact and become a paragon of sustainability in St. Barts.
In Room Commitment
One of the most important decisions we made when Le Barthélemy opened its doors was for you to rest in supreme comfort on bed wear made of traceable organically grown cotton. A small detail, perhaps, but when protecting the places we love, every decision matters. Including yours. Following a thorough and honest communication with you, our valued guests, we are delighted to report that Le Barth has reduced laundry water use by 20% between 2016 and 2022.

A Zero Waste Philosophy
At Amis St. Barth’s we’re beyond-focused on creating a low-impact, eco-responsible gourmet experience.
Several actions have been instituted over the past seven years, including using every bit of the ingredients, from pit to peel, to make fondos and butter, and growing our own vegetables and spices.

Ecological To-Go Packaging
Goodbye plastic. Located between the bay and sea, we are supremely careful of anything that might harm waterways, which is why our Le Barth to-go cups and straws are made from eco-responsible, low-impact, recycled paper.

Our Approach to Dining
Amis sources local produce by shopping daily and recognizes the journey of those who are consuming fewer animal products through both vegan and vegetarian menus. We’ve also acquired new, innovative cuisine equipment to save more energy in gas and electricity while cooking, and have instilled selective storing.
Whenever possible, Le Barthelemy partners with local farmers and fishers to procure and serve local fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Not only supporting the local economy, but ensuring that our guests enjoy the freshest foods.

Our B. Green Team
At Le Barth, every single one of us is deeply committed to our cause and believes a better, brighter future is in store as long as we all keep moving forward and working together to achieve it. Our B. Green Team is here to keep it all going, to be the inspiration, the helping hand, the eternal torch tasked with coming up with fresh ideas, to awaken that special something in all of us, the dormant drive to do everything in our power to help those around us, nurture and take care of the environment, and preserve our history.
What do our collaborators think?
Caring team members are cared for. At Le Barth, we take care of our team. It is essential that each of our collaborators feel good professionally and personally, as well-being at work drives us every day to give the best of ourselves! That's what makes them the best prepared to care for others, including our valued guests.
Our staff’s commitment
-
Bye, bye, plastic
Ever since our grand opening in 2016, we’ve been working towards more and more responsible practices, like providing nearby housing for our staff, and creating fun dynamics to educate and urge our collaborators in all things sustainable. One of our initiatives is a no-plastic goal for all of us here at Le Barth, to be carried out in many different instances:
- The creation of a branded, sustainable Tote Bag for our employees to limit the use of plastic bags.
- The implementation of LiLLii water, a 100% recyclable natural French mineral water and water dispensers for refilling.
- The avoidance of one-use plastics overall.
-
Employee Training
We hire and train team members that share our values of sustainability and commitment to St. Barth, our island home. Throughout the season, team members participate not only in traditional operations training but are invited to meet with environmental and civic associations, and all team members are encouraged to join Le Barth leadership in beach clean-ups and other activities to support our beautiful island home, like get-togethers for Coral Restoration to help restoring Grand Cul de Sac’s reefs.
Sustainable Happenings at Le Barth
Green is spreading all over St. Barts, and it will keep going, as the journey towards sustainability is a never-ending one. The path goes on and on, and there’s always something else we can do, a bit more we can help with, and someone we can lend a hand to. It's up to us to keep striving for a better, greener, fairer and kinder future, and through the many sustainable events at Le Barth, we can all continue to contribute to something bigger than all of us – the future.

Throughout the years, we have taken action in many efforts to support, strengthen, and create initiatives driven toward sustainability, society, and preservation. All of us at Le Barth understand that the basis for a better future lies with the people that will build it, and are honored to say, we’ve supported our community in any way we can.

#BGreenTeam
Our B.
Happenings
Sustainable Happenings at Le Barth
Green is spreading all over St. Barts, and it will keep going, as the journey towards sustainability is a never-ending one. The path goes on and on, and there’s always something else we can do, a bit more we can help with, and someone we can lend a hand to. It's up to us to keep striving for a better, greener, fairer and kinder future, and through the many sustainable events at Le Barth, we can all continue to contribute to something bigger than all of us – the future.
